Luna Landmark: Cacti on Canal

Xeriscape from the Rio Grande to the New Orleans Streetcar Line

We drove into the desert in our 1973 VW van. Cacti, wildlife, mountains, canyons, massive skies and vivid colors inspired us beyond measure. The vibrancy of life that thrives within extreme heat is astounding. The palette of natural beauty and serene silence helped us to soothe our spinning minds and focus on the ‘now’. Nothing to make, no plants to plant, just natural beauty to enjoy and admire.

We took the experience of camping in Big Bend National Park to the heart of New Orleans and built a cactus garden right on the iconic Canal Streetcar Line. Sounds of music, second lines and laughter fill the air in NOLA day and night. People flock to the Mississippi for a stunning view of a roaring river, and head to the French Quarter for a genuinely unique experience of culture, creativity and joy. We wanted this high traffic area to serve as a public example of what an artfully designed xeriscape can look like in the heart of Louisiana.

Healing Waters Inspire a Mirage Fountain

Standing at the top of the Chisos Mountains, we took in the view of the Santa Elena Canyon, a wild landscape we had hiked hours before, walked around, checked out the plants, then set off to bathe in warm healing natural springs. For hundreds of years, the Boquillo Springs have been believed to soothe both body and mind. We relaxed, soaked in the elements, and cooled off in the Rio Grande. As we swam in the warm waters, and cooled off in the river, we spotted horses peaking through the grass.

The fountain on Canal Street serves as a meeting point, place of relaxation and point of interest for both tourists and locals. We created a scape that compliments the sleekness fo this reflective pool and plays into a ‘mirage’ effect. Biophilic design principles often hi light the healing properties of water, and we couldn’t agree more. This is area intended to encourage pedestrians to experience a moment of calm in the heart of the city, and to seek the even lusher, more tropical oasis that we’ve created inside Canal Place.

1973 VW as a Vessel for Adventure and Art

Our VW, Pearl Luna took us to the tops of the Chisos mountains, the bottom of the Santa Elena Canyon and to beautiful spots along the Rio Grande. Now, we pop up Pearl Luna on Canal Street, along side our Xeriscape to share our vision of the Luna Lifestyle.
